God's plans for your future

By Pastor Tyrell Haag

Isaiah 55:12-13 (NIV) says: You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed.

This promise in the last 2 verses of Isaiah 55 has to do with you and has tremendous relevance for your future.

What sort of future is it? What kind of future is God planning for you? You will be happy. He is planning that you will be happy. Verse 12 says you will go out in joy.  You have some happiness now. Your sins are forgiven and you have a purpose to live for, but there is a lot of grief and sorrow mixed into this joy. That is why this phrase go out is important. When Jesus returns, you will go out in joy. There is a lot of pain in this world that we want to go out of, and God knows that. In fact, He is planning that. His plan is that you will go out in joy. The age of perfect happiness begins and God is planning that you will be happy forever.

God is also planning for you to have peace. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace. The hope of joy implies that all the inner turmoil will be removed taken away, and the hope of peace implies that all the outer turmoil will be overcome and banished.  That is why this phrase to be led forth is important. That you will be led forth in peace, implies that you have a Commander and a Leader who will lead you and help you. One you can trust. One who will be victorious and bring the peace you long for.

The last part of verse 13 says that this transformation of God's universe is intended to be a memorial, a name to the Lord. It is going to be an everlasting sign that we will not be cut off from Him again. You can tell a lot about a leader by the kind of memorial he erects for himself and you can tell a lot about your god by the kind of memorial he builds for himself. It is fitting that God seeks a memorial for Himself. He is God. He ought to be remembered. Everything ought to point to God and remind us of God in the age to come. Everything should be a kind of sign that sends your thoughts to God and reminds you of the kind of person He is.

What is this memorial? It is the everlasting happiness of his people. Verse 13 ... This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed. What is it? It is getting rid of thorns and briars, and the growth of pine trees and myrtle. It is the singing of mountains and the peace and joy of you and me. You see what that means about our God?  It means that all the omnipotent energy and zeal that engages His heart to bring glory to His name, is the very same omnipotent energy and zeal that engages His heart to bring joy to you and me. Nothing should be more encouraging to us in the world than that.
