Living by Faith

By Dr Roelf Petersen

We live in times where the existence of God is questioned by many, and the argument of the evolution theory is heard on many platforms, especially in our schools. Many Christians' faith in the accuracy of God's Word, is being tested.

But stand firm! Most of the influential astronomers and scientists of today believe that the Bible is true, that God exists and that He is the creator of the universe and mankind. Dr Robert Jastrow, a world-renowned astrophysicist, wrote: "The astronomic (astronomer) proof supports the Bible's story about the origin of the universe - the details differ, but the essential elements of the astronomical and biblical account in the Book of Genesis correspond", as written in Why I believe by Kennedy, D. James.

We don't always find it easy to live by faith in every circumstance - the stories of Moses, Elijah and Peter testify to that. To me it seems even more difficult to live by faith when you become tired and your strength becomes less after a challenging time (just think about Elijah's desperate flee after his victory against the Baal prophets).

But you and I can stand firm in the promise that God made to Moses at the burning bush:

"I am who I am" (Exodus 3:14)

These words were a promise from God to Moses and a sign of His existence, provision and eternal presence. He also confirmed this to Isaiah centuries later: "The word of our God endures forever (Is 40:8)... The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth; He gives strength to the wearyand increases the power of the weak" (Isaiah 40: 28-31).

The Lord encourages and expects us to live by faith from day to day and He proclaims that our faith is more precious to Him than gold (1 Peter 1:7). It is said that gold is a good conductor of an electric current and therefore we can say, with respect, that by faith we have access to God's immense power source.

Let us trust Him for renewal and strengthening of our faith and to equip us to take on 2017 with new strength and energy.
