How Often Do You Lie and What Does the Bible Say About It?

Written by on 19 September 2024

As Christians, we are called to live according to the standards of God’s Word. Integrity and honesty are among the most important aspects of the Christian life. Unfortunately, even believers sometimes struggle to always pursue the truth, and we sometimes fall into the temptation to lie, whether knowingly or unknowingly.

Perspective from the Word

Proverbs 12:19 says:

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

This verse carries a deep meaning about the importance of truth and the temporary nature of lies. It reminds us that truth, no matter how difficult it may be to speak, always prevails and lasts, while lies are fleeting and will eventually be exposed.

The Bible is very clear about the consequences of lying. In Proverbs 6:16-19, we read that lies are one of the seven things the Lord detests. The Bible also makes it clear that a life of lying has spiritual and moral consequences, damaging our relationship with God and with others. Lies breed distrust and division, while truth brings peace and unity.

Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

Christians must strive to live in the light of truth daily. Proverbs 12:19 encourages us to understand that lies only survive temporarily, but truth has lasting effects. This principle should serve as a guideline in our daily interactions and decisions, and we must always focus on speaking the truth, even when it is difficult.
