The secret to spirituality

What is Abiding?

To abide is to stay rooted in Christ. Just as branches draw life from the vine, believers draw strength, purpose, and sustenance from a deep connection with Jesus. Jesus emphasizes this in John 15:4, saying,

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

Abiding signifies intimacy and dependence—a constant, conscious awareness of God’s presence. It reflects a life centred on Christ, where every thought, decision, and action flows from that union.

How Does Abiding Happen?

Abiding begins with intentionality. It is cultivated through prayer, studying God’s Word, and meditating on His truth. As Jesus says in John 15:7,

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

This underscores the importance of internalizing Scripture and aligning our hearts with God’s will. Abiding also requires surrender—letting go of self-reliance and trusting fully in God’s provision and guidance. This ongoing practice allows us to experience His love, peace, and joy in profound ways.

What Does Abiding Look Like?

A life of abiding bears fruit. In John 15:5, Jesus says,

Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

This fruit manifests in acts of love, service, and obedience to God. It also looks like worship—daily choosing to honor and glorify God in all we do. Abiding produces transformation, creating lives marked by spiritual growth and reflecting Christ’s character. In John 15:11, Jesus concludes by sharing the purpose of abiding: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”

Through abiding, we discover true, biblical Christian spirituality. It is how we draw near to God, worship Him daily, and live fully as Christians. By remaining in Christ, we experience the fullness of joy and the abundant life He promises.
